How has illegal immigration reform hit the ag industry?

Georgia’s largest industry is its $69 billion agriculture industry. Tuesday, the Agriculture Department will present a report on whether that industry has been hurt by the illegal immigration reform passed last year, better known as H.B. 87.

We already have some idea of the answer.

A few months ago, the Georgia Fruit & Vegetable Growers Association estimated a 40 percent labor shortage this past spring, after the bill was passed. On Monday, the association’s executive director, Charles Hall, said much of that labor actually returned in the fall. But, he said, growers are still bracing for hard times in the year ahead.

Funny when you put pressure on illegals the farming industry has a shortage of 40% in their labor force. Also do you see the black man harvesting crops??? That is a rarity my friend, unless it was a private family farm where most of the workers are owners.

    • Insurgent says:

Unless they have physical limitations or are elderly, why can’t those receiveing welfare work on these farms? Most is seasonal work anyway !!!

      • ldmstr says:

Are you saying people on welfare should work for their benefit??? If so would you make them work on their knees picking vegies??? I think those on welfare should not be forced to work but if they were required to train for a job of one form or other then that might work. The libs would run amuck if we tried to require work for welfare.

        • john whittington says:

Let em run to any Socialist country they wish!!!

          • James Kirksey says:

I agree with this comment. Those pointed heads in the department of education often talk about self-esteem and feel good things for students. Why not start again with basic principles; Teach the dignity of work.

          • ChuckInTexas says:

I think they are already “here”. This place is going down the commie rabbit hole post-haste.

        • Duke says:

Idmstr, I hope that’s what he meant!! It deserves some serious thought. Might cut into the drug busines though. You wouldn’t have as many dealers on the street. Nah, if you receive something free, you should have enough pride to at least try to work. There is too much Free This and Free That and Mechelles sitting around looking for something else for free.

          • nativetx03 says:

Duke why do you think Obama wants the child labor in forced and a law so we can’t make all those illegal kids go out and work and help pay some of those benefits that he is giving them, just train them to occupy this great part of the world like he did.

          • johnny h says:

            Nothing is FREE!!!
All the benefits awarded by the Washington bureaucracy come from the taxes working Americans have to stump up every year.
Perhaps the tax rates should be driven DOWN, so that more citizens(yes citizens) could have more money to spend on WHAT THEY CHOOSE rather than good money being creamed off to give to those who could work if they gave a rats ass!!
No problem with money for Vets. or the disabled, but Ill Aliens should not be kept by our taxes!!
            Too many “entitlements” today.
To be “entitled” you should AT LEAST be a citizen, and have worked and paid taxes like the Silent Majority.
In Gt Britain. approx 45% of spent taxation goes on their National Health Service.
            Beware ObamaCare!!

        • Annie Ann says:

What do Governments do with God when He says “If you don’t work you don’t eat.” So do we know more than God, well I’ll answer that we think we do. That is just what Adam and Eve thought and they ate of the tree that they were not to eat. That is still free will that God gave us and we paid for it too. For every action there is a reaction. To work gives a person a feeling of accomplishment, self respect, that they are needed, helps keep them healthy and the list goes on.
          Blessings

        • ccfonten says:

No. You want food, money, “things”?? WORK FOR IT!! There is absolutely nothing wrong with having to work for what WE THE PEOPLE give you. Work in the fields, orchards, whatever….pick up trash off the side of the road…plant some veggie plants to help feed yourself and your family. It is honorable and honest work.

        • ConnieJ says:

Hogwash!!! There’s nothing disgraceful in working “on their hands and knees picking veggies”. What is disgraceful is the handing out the money of the hardworking American taxpayer to the ‘entitlement-mentality’ people who see nothing wrong with living off of someone else’s hard-earned money. So, to them I say: “Get down on your knees and start picking!”

          • andy in OR says:

I am white and 74 . When I was living in Nebraska we worked at a State Park. You know what we did, CLEAN TOLETS there. to make ends meet. You have no idea what we found in them, crap in the sinks, urnals,ON the tolets, smeard on the walls and on the floors and in the womans showers. No it was a job and I did it to survive.

          • Pineappple says:

I planted a garden and harvested it on my hands and knees so I could afford to pay the taxes that supported those who wouldn’t work.
WHAT IS WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE?

          • Peggy says:

I agree!! I’m so sick of watching people, who I KNOW, living on WELFARE!! The bad part about it is, THEY’RE LIVING BETTER THAN ME!!! & I work EVERYDAY!!! How fair is that!? I know, life isn’t fair, BUT this crap is just plain WRONG!!!

          • Poorman says:

When I was in Korea (74-76 and 81-85) you found workers in groups cleaning up the highway shoulders as that is the way they paid for welfare – they had to work for it. If they couldn’t work the families took care of their own families and somebody was always working to eat.

          • MLH says:

Prisoners can pick veggies too. ;) ) They are already Legal Slaves under the 13th Amendment. ;) ))

        • Riverdweller says:

You sound like a lib. Idmstr. Why shouldn’t they be forced to work>
It was done in the 40′s and could be done today.
Of course the Unions, and all the bleeding hearts would squawk and mustn’t hurt their poor sensitive feelings.
Having to work for welfare would give some of them more of a sense of Pride in themselves, a sense of Accomplishment and possibly a sense of taking Responsibility for themselves and they would have a chance to make a future for them and their families off of welfare ( having the nanny state plantation taking care of them from cradle to grave ). Having nothing to do is one reason so many on welfare are also on Medication for Depression.

          • Lee says:

Riverdweller, I think Idmstr was being sarcastic.
Andy, my hat is off to you! Back in the day, it was degrading to accept charity, because most folks had a thing called PRIDE, which the lefties say is a bad thing today. I say, bring PRIDE back!

        • Patricia says:

Seeing the Libs run amuck would be nothing new. lol They are like chickens with their heads cut off, spouting the memorized party lies and just listen to Wasserman-Schultz to hear what that sounds like.
If able to work, people receiving assistance of any kind should work, along with drop outs from the school system but that last part bothers me. I keep wondering if the school drop outs are the only youth able to resist the indoctrination from the Socialist, Union teachers that are busy disenfranchising the youth of America. The OWS are products of the indoctrination. See them and weep for America’s lost generations.

        • wog1 says:

I have to work for mine and so should they.

        • EWH says:

IDMSTR, THERE ARE MANY MANY PROPLE ON WELFARE THAT CAN WORK & DON’T WANT TO. I HAVE HEARD MANY STATE THEY CAN GET MORE MONEY ON WELFARE THEN WORK. I HAVE SEEN MANY 3RD GENERATION PEOPLE THAT HAVE NEVER WORKED A DAY IN THEIR LIFE. THEY KNOW HOW TO WORK THE SYSTEM.

          • DENNIS says:

This crap started when they changed the constitution to allow senators to be elected instead of appointed by the states,,, Our founding fathers had it that way for a reason,,, If you can vote for all the elected officials to raid the treasury, you won’t survive!!! Check the timing,,, when they added that amendment to stop appointing senators,,,, 200 years, we are almost a socialist welfare state,,, don’t count our downfall from when the constitution was written,, start the downfall count from when that was changed,,,,,,

        • DENNIS says:

THEN LET THEM STARVE!! I am tired of paying for welfare folks to sit at home and procreate and raise more democrat voters while I do without. I did not have kids because I could not afford them. If these bastards want money and food stamps,, let them get off their lazy butts and pick food!!!!! I bet the rolls will shrink real fast!! Or, move to Cuba!!

          • Rose-Marie Noa says:

Absolutely! Of course you know Fidel is one of the world’s richest men……but you dont see “redistribution of wealth” in Cuba! Send all the lazy bums there & see how they like it! Of course the blacks are on the welfare rolls in higher numbers than any other race…..& have more children out of wedlock!!! Obama’s people & I wonder if he is proud of them?

        • shot in the foot says:

You bet I would. Most of them are not trying to get job training. Why do that when you can set on your but and get paid for nothing.

        • wildmann says:

Phook ALL Welfare Leeches! I didn’t make those Rug Ratz, Why am I required to support THEM??I supported mine. Why are the Recipient’s Rights Stronger than MINE!!!

        • Colonialgirl says:

Noope, most are capable of working on their knees and “job training” has never worked. Pick veggies or freeze and starve; no more free rides for the able bodied or the baby factories.

      • el_loco_jp says:

        A-freakin’-men.

      • John Detwiler says:

That is exactly right unless one is phyically handicaped or very old there should be a requirement that applicant for wellfare be required to work. It’s time rid our states of these freeloading people. And this would also be a movement to free the government of excessive food stamp issuance.

      • Insurgent says:

I might ad that these people should be drug tested as well just the same as working American taxpayers!
submitted by the Insurgent and his cousin, I.P. Freely

      • Rocky says:

A job ? You must be joking. Many of those on some kind of government entitlement program have never worked, never will work and will riot if their check does not arrive. In is generational in many cases, we have created an entitlement mentally that may destroy us in the end.

        • Peggy says:

Yep. You should hear some of the kids in school! They don’t mind telling you at all, quote, ” Why do I need to learn? I’m getting a check now & I’ll get one after I get out of school too if I can’t do any job.” Honestly, just makes me want to knock the hell out of them. Oh, by the way, they also have medical cards. SO, no Dr bills & med’s are FREE!!!

      • noobama2012 says:

Because 99% of our government n charge don’t have any frickin common sense. Wanna see how fast unemployed welfare find a job, put them at picking cotton or whatever.

      • EEL RIVER KID says:

thats exactly what i said, you dont want to pick fruit, or u think you are to good to pick fruit. cut off the welfare. if you are sponging off the taxpayer you should be poor. your kidds should be wearing used clothes, and you should be eating a high starch diet, instead of steaks that the aclu provided you. you should be livin in condemned housing, not new homes. if you dont like it get a job and get off the system. dont snivel if you got roaches or rats that goes with being poor.

      • Jim says:

Are you serious? You believe that they should just get free money for doing nothing? Do you work? If you do, then you should resent anyone not working that can. I sure as hell do not have any sympathy for anyone that will not work. I have worked 2 jobs for about 15 years of my life to make ends meet. You do what you have to do. If they go hungry then they will work. That was one of the first rules of this country at Jamestown when some just wanted to go around looking for gold and not working on establishing the colony but showed up at meal time to eat. James Smith said if you do not work you do not eat. Same principle should apply today.

        • ChuckInTexas says:

No, these welfare POS aren’t going to work if someone cuts them off their check. They are going to riot and burn their town. Just like in Watts, CA in the late 60′s. Maybe its better to take them off their checks, let them riot and then go in and destroy them all. This conrty will be much better off without all the leeches.

    • Archie says:

Go into any low income housing area and ask for anyone to work in a labor job. You will hear the words, how much you pay and you will get the answer,I ain’t working for no minimum wage. Or you will hear the words, I ain’t working in no field ’cause I ain’t no slave.
We have raised several generations of people who will not work since the gubmint pays them to sit on their arses and use and sell drugs and make babies as a way of increasing their “salaries” and lining conditions.

      • Wayne Peterkin says:

Excellent comment and all too true!

        • John Detwiler says:

And just as true for the white freeloaders. I was talking to a Union Carpenter the other day and I brought up the subject of the excessive (Long term) Unemployment Compensation. And he defended it by explaining. It appears he was offered a job that the wages would after traveling and taxes would leave him with slightly more than he was recieving on unemployment. Therefore he intended to utilize the extended benifits untill they ran out and if another extention was enacted he would do a lot of fishing as he enjoyed his paid vacation. Oh yes because of the size of his family he was also recieving food stamps.

        • ABO says:

          I’ll second that, Wayne.

      • Duke says:

……….that is too friggin’ funny!! But so friggin’ true!! That’s exactly what you will and would hear!
