 Dear Jack, In just days, Washington insiders could give Barack Obama the power to shut down your Internet web sites and stop me from speaking with you. “SOPA, or the Stop Online Piracy Act, is the House’s attempt to severely censor the internet ostensibly in order to clamp down on piracy. The companion bill in the Senate is the Protect IP Act. The two bills create an armada of new regulations that help big corporations and hurt regular people, start-ups, and clamp down on innovation,” writes E.D. Kain in Forbes. Among those powers is unchecked Executive Branch authority to shut down websites simply suspected of having copyrighted content... ...even if it’s just liberal tricksters posting it in an unauthorized fashion to trigger a shutdown and silence a group like American Tradition Partnership. The Chinese government has the same authority, and there is it routinely used to attack groups who question the government. Republican online consultant Patrick Ruffini writes “The problem with the bill, and its Senate companion, the PROTECT IP Act, is not in its goals: no one disagrees artists should be paid for their work. It’s that it uses illegitimate means — censoring and blocking websites like they do in repressive regimes from China to Iran — to pursue these objectives. Furthermore, each subsequent version of the bill took even more draconian steps to regulate the Internet, effectively leaving any site with a user-contributed content no choice but to pre-screen every posting to comply with the law. Try that with 50 million tweets a day. With an election fast approaching, Barack Obama would love nothing more than to sic his federal agents on me and stop you and I from exposing his radical agenda. One of the reasons his poll numbers are plummeting is because you and I have worked so hard to expose the fraud and Chicago-style payoffs behind his job-killing, palm-greasing, corrupt “green” agenda. Barack Obama wants to shut me down. And these Washington insider tricks are his plan. Dear Mr. Hotchkiss:
Thank you for writing to me in support of my position on the bonuses of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac executives. As you may know, it was recently reported that the Federal Housing Finance Agency approved $12.79 million in bonuses to ten top Fannie and Freddie executives. With one in every four home owners in America underwater on their mortgages, it is outrageous that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac executives would expect multi-million dollar bonuses after those Government Sponsored Enterprises (GSEs) received over $170 billion in taxpayer bailouts.
As soon as the appropriate legislative vehicle is available, I will be introducing an amendment to make clear that so long as Fannie and Freddie are in government conservatorship, bonuses such as these will not be paid out. I assure you many other Senators also share your disappointment in this practice, as this legislation has bipartisan support. Additionally, President Obama has previously opposed huge bonuses for Fannie and Freddie executives and denounced such windfalls for leaders of companies bailed out by taxpayers as an ‘outrage’ and a violation of ‘our fundamental values.’ We hope the Administration will live up to its rhetoric and join our effort to stop these absurd and outrageous bonuses.
Thank you again for contacting me and supporting me on this issue. Abuse and misuse in government is always one of my top priorities, and I will continue to work to eliminate programs and practices that are costly to the American tax payer.
