Teacher forces students to critique GOP candidates, prepare report for Obama

by Joel McDurmon on Mar 23, 2012
The Daily Caller reports,
A Virginia middle school teacher recently forced his students to support President Barack Obama’s re-election campaign by conducting opposition research in class against the Republican presidential candidates.
The 8th grade students, who attend Liberty Middle School in Fairfax County, were required to seek out the vulnerabilities of Republican presidential hopefuls and forward them to the Obama campaign.
“This assignment was just creepy beyond belief — like something out of East Germany during the Cold War,” one frustrated father, who asked for his family to remain anonymous, told The Daily Caller.
The assignment was for students to research the backgrounds and positions of each of the GOP candidates for president and find “weaknesses” in them, the parent explained. From there, students were to prepare a strategy paper to exploit those weaknesses and then to send their suggestions to the Obama campaign.
Liberty teacher Michael Denman, who declined to comment, unveiled the assignment in mid-January when he broke the Civics Honor’s class into four groups, one for each Republican candidate. The students were then to collaborate as a group and research the backgrounds of their assigned candidate.

It backfires on the teacher when (and if) they get to Paul; the kids turn libertarian.

I would've loved to have this teacher. I would have written a huge report on why Obama is a crony opportunist, and why people like to worship him. I would consider that 'F' an honor and a privilege to shove it right back into that teacher's face. It would be so fun to watch when he pops off and fumigates.

WOW, he could have had just one group writing the report and send it to Sheriff Joe. I bet he has a pile of stuff on Hillary and Bill. I wonder if he had that sent to Barry 3 years ago! Is that how these children got to the Honors Class?
As a parent, I would have had a hay day with this assignment. I would have had all the good stuff of all the candidates and all the lies and misquotes of Obama and turned that in...thereby educating the entire class as to the unadulterated truth of the democrats who just can't seem to tell the truth EVER...and exposing this teacher as a fraud. He would then be looking for a job with his wonderful obama...finding that the one whom he worships has killed all the economic engines that produce jobs. Nothing like a 'reality check' of that nature for the idiots who pass for educators today.

Perhaps you/we - are missing something here. Doesn't this help the kids to research candidates before voteing for them and by sending their conclusions will show obama that even schoolchildren are not fooled by his crap and lies.
This teacher should by all means be questioned as to his motives and perceived goals for this assignment.

Example of brainwashing the younger generation. I agree that the teacher should be fired or at least reprimanded. School is no place for politics, especially at that age.

This teacher needs to be fired.

Placing this type of responsibility upon a bunch of 14 year olds.......who have very little understanding of the real world of politics and the world we live in.......is absolutely disgusting.

The little coward had no backbone to comment on his assignment.

Get rid of him.
The kind of stuff you would expect from a totalitarian government.

Good teachers today are under fire. Teachers who actually teach are forced to spend many hours after class and at home not grading papers or preparing for the next day's lessons, but rather, completing paperwork and bureaucratic morass thrown at them by insecure principals who fear for their jobs when students underperform. Good teachers communicate with parents to get them involved in their child's education. When that fails and the child disrupts other students from learning, a parent-teacher conference is called but often the parent does not show. The parent shows to bring the child their Moon Pie or bag of chips for lunch that they forgot but not for substantive discourse about their child.

To make themselves look better and to "improve education" many states are now adopting set standards and tests, the scores on these tests determine whether a child is succeeding. Such emphasis is put on these standardized tests that teachers are now teaching to the test, just teaching the elements which he/she knows are on the test. A well-rounded education is a major casualty.

Every governor, state superintendent, county superintendent, etc. all want everyone to know they are doing something to improve education, when they are only putting a bandaid on the problem, sweeping the problem under the rug, kicking the problem down the street for future leaders to deal with, and penalizing good teachers, but retaining and protecting those teachers like this partisan moron in Virginia. I guess if you do this as a teacher, you are applauded and given a merit pay raise, tenure, and a lifetime position in the system?
The only problem I can envision as being problematic is submitting the reports to the Obama campaign. That turned the assignment from being an exercise in research, critical thinking, and strategy into data gathering for a political ideology. It would seem that a better assignment would have been to assign a candidate to each of the 4 groups and let each group find weaknesses in the other 3 candidates. Then each group would swap research and "fact check" and evaluate each other's work. I guess the upside is that we can now say that the Obama team needs 14 year olds to do their field work.

Where are the state run media in this situation?Where the parents in this school and why are they putting up with such cow manure?????????????Simply outragoues!
This is the national teachers union at it's best. It is of my assumption that Obama and Co. are in deep trouble when they need the rational of 16 year old kids to try and win an election. But this is deeper than that.
When the election is held and the new president emerges there will be some drastic changes in many of the agencies and contractual agreements held between the government and respective unions and multiple activist organizations.
Looks as if the teacher is looking at job security and self preservation at the expense of others.

He should have had five groups and include Obama into the research. This is the fatal flaw of this assignment. For a true learning experience all the potential candidates should be researched and NO findings sent to anyone. Results should be shared with other students/teacher and evaluated on the quality of research and writing of report... That would be a good learning experience, preparing students for future voting preparation
This is the type of teacher you end up with when they are tied to the NEA and other Union goons. This teacher should be fired and the entire district investigated for allowing this to go on.

Now that this event has hit the news, I feel that it only right that the students papers be published. It would be interesting to see how the truths and falsehoods within the papers are handled by this teacher. Public school right? Come on school board.

This is nothing more than a Hitler brainwashing of the youth. This teacher should not only be fired but lose his retirement and benefits and should not receive any severance pay. The worse thing about these types of teachers is they are doing this on taxpayer money. So not only are we paying for these jerks benefits and wages, but paying them to bed with Obama and they are including children in the scheme. Taxpayer funds should be stripped from any public school that does these types of brainwashing. "........forced his students to support President Barack Obama’s re-election campaign by conducting opposition research in class against the Republican presidential candidates." The parents should be outraged, but I imagine if they didn't file a complaint it is because they are Obama supporters and complicit in the misappropriation of taxpayer money. Every student should be told that they are not slaves to Obama and can express their own views rather than having teachers tell them what and how to think.

Since this was done openly it make me wonder what BS was fed to the students in a more subtle manner.

all this does is fan the flames of a growing conservatism movement. They are destroying them selves just like communism always does. The human mind wants to be free unless you are on welfare.
What the teacher should be teaching his class is our Constitution, Bill of Rights, and the Declaration of Independence. Those were the things we were taught when I was in school. Now it appears, the Government doesn't want the kids to know their heritage. The Federal Department of Education needs to be abolished altogether.

This sounds like things the Communist Party did in the Soviet Union... Lead the kids in a certain direction without letting them think for themselves. Then if they do think for themselves they are punished.
