There were thousands of people in attendance to commemorate the day. But as Charlotte and her team mingled with the crowd, until people personally met Charlotte and saw her dedication, they would not listen to her because she was a Republican – ironically, like Dr. Martin Luther King was! As one of Charlotte's supporters wrote us, "When our program started, the crowd began to grow as Mrs. Alma Tate sang in her mesmerizing voice, 'Amazing Grace.' He was followed by fourteen year old, Kayla Padgett who sang what the black community since 1905 has called the national Negro anthem, 'Lift Every Voice and Sing,' written by James Weldon Johnson, the original executive secretary of the NAACP and also a Republican… The most exciting part of the program was when Charlotte began to speak – the crowd was mesmerized and it was my pleasure to witness people changing before my eyes.
