Today the Republican presidential candidates for 2012 will take to the stage at the Conservative Political Action Conference, CPAC. Here at the event, it seems clear Rick Santorum has the crowd's heart. His momentum is real. His positive appeal is real. But there are lingering doubts about his general election viability.
Following Rick Santorum, Mitt Romney will take to the stage. While Santorum may have the crowd's heart, most people still recognize Mitt Romney as the guy whose race it is to win or lose. He has failed to connect with this crowd. He has failed to connect with conservative voters and today will be his last best opportunity to sell himself. If he does, he could have smooth sailing. He needs a home run.
Closing today will be Newt Gingrich. If Santorum has their heart, Newt Gingrich is fighting for their heads. They like him as a bold thinker, but they don't trust him because of his lack of self-discipline. There are doubts he is even viable any more.
The buzz yesterday was that Santorum and Gingrich may divide up Super Tuesday so they both are not fighting Mitt Romney on the same turf. The buzz today is that maybe, just maybe someone else could stand up and run or at least have an open convention.
In seven years of attending CPAC, this year has the highest level of anticipation for a white knight and the lowest level of enthusiasm I have seen.
