Obama preaches Jesus would tax the rich, be Progressive
Obama used the pulpit at the national prayer breakfast to promote his leftist political platform under the guise of advancing “the Golden Rule,” “God’s command,” “Jesus’s teaching,” and “the biblical call” for “me as a Christian.” BuzzFeed.com reports,
The president said he often falls to his knees in prayer, and emphasized the role of his religious values in determining where to lead the country.
“I’d be remiss if I stopped there; if my values were limited to personal moments of prayer or private conversations with pastors or friends. So instead, I must try — imperfectly, but I must try — to make sure those values motivate me as one leader of this great nation.”
Obama applied these values to domestic policies, financial reform, social welfare policies, and even foreign aid. But his call to increase taxes on the wealthy a reflecting “Jesus’s teaching” is perhaps the most notable:
Obama maintained that his call for the wealthiest to give up their tax breaks, he’s doing so out of economic necessity, but also in line with biblical teachings.
“And I think to myself, if I’m willing to give something up as somebody who’s been extraordinarily blessed, and give up some of the tax breaks that I enjoy, I actually think that’s going to make economic sense. But for me as a Christian, it also coincides with Jesus’s teaching that ‘for unto whom much is given, much shall be required,’” Obama said, noting Jewish and Islamic teachings say much the same thing.
This claim recalls the debate had last year over “What Would Jesus Take?” in which the leftist social organizer Jim Wallis prompted a “Nothing” from Rush Limbaugh. Rush was then blasted ignorantly by an overconfident Lawrence O’Donnell. I exposed the whole debacle from a biblical point of view in my article, “What Would Jesus Take?”
The lessons presented there, and in my book God versus Socialism, apply just as well to Obama’s claims here. The simple version is, there is a vast difference between the voluntary giving and sacrifice to which Jesus calls us, and the government coercion, taxation, and redistribution of wealth that liberals practice. Yes, there are thousands of Bible verses that call for caring for the poor and giving, but not one of those verses justifies using government in order to force people to do so. On the contrary, coercion is not charity, and giving performed under coercion is not Christian charity.
By that standard, progressives like Obama have erected the most anti-Christian government possible. Instead of leading the world with Christian values, they are blaspheming the name of Christ, breaking His laws, and suppressing His social values systematically.
And the potential hypocrisy here is rank. If Obama really, truly believed he should “give up some of the tax breaks that I enjoy,” then he wouldn’t wait for the government to tell him to do so. He would already be giving it despite tax policy.
Contrary to what liberals have preached for 180 years, Jesus would not have been a Progressive like them. He had way too high a standard of what freedom and liberty really are.
