And no hours, nor amount of labor, nor amount of money would deter me from giving the best that there was in me. And I have done that ever since, and I win by it. I know." Colonel Sanders The latest column published 3/11/12 in the Business Section of “The Times" Become an actor… playing you! As often as I've said to clients, “You've got to get out of your comfort zone” I've said it to myself at least as many times. After all, it's difficult to leave the comfort of a way of doing business and forging ahead on an unknown path because it is part of the human experience to seek comfort and once comfortable, to stay there. But the world doesn't work that way. Business is a competitive endeavor and in order to succeed, a company must be always in a state of transition which means that management has to be constantly trying new ways of doing things and leading the staff into giving up that cushy comfort zone. And, if you, like many people, are not natural born leaders how do you lead the charge into the void? I suggest that people who are taking on a role that feels unnatural to them become actors. I first did this to myself when I was beginning to speak in public. Before speaking my knees would shake, my hands and forehead would break into a sweat, and my voice would quiver. Then, one day, I saw a movie where an actor I had seen play many parts played a part of someone completely different than anything I had seen him do before and a light bulb went off in my head. “If that actor can play the part of someone very different from himself, then maybe I can play the part of a great speaker” and my attitude changed. I was no longer “me” speaking to a crowd. I was an actor playing the part of “me” as a great speaker. It worked. I wasn't nervous, I didn't sweat, I didn't stammer because it wasn't “me.” (I always picture a bald Brad Pitt wearing glasses standing at a lectern). Now imagine that you are a famous actor playing the part of “you” leading your staff on a new path, giving them that exciting, inspiring speech, getting them to forge ahead into the unknown. I'll bet they'll roar and follow. "For the first time in nine years, I've had a Vision of where I want to business to go to, a plan to get there, and the action steps we need to implement in order to meet our goals. Our sales volume is up significantly because of some rather large changes we made to our sales process and now we're dealing with the challenge of absorbing the increased work into our schedules. We've added a new employee and purchased a big piece of equipment to give us the capacity to do the work." I'd love to tell you that this was all due to OYTG, but that would be only partially true. He has really worked hard at making the changes that came about because of his involvement in the program and deserves all the credit because of the changes he has instituted and the effort he has put in. If you want to break through to the next level and are willing to do the work, OYTG can be the catalyst to get you there. The next OYTG group will start in late April / early May (date to be announced). If you are seeking breakthroughs and greatness, OYTG is the place to start.
