The Cornhusker Kickback Strikes Back!

December 28, 2011
Fellow Patriot,

Yesterday, Senator Ben Nelson (D-NE) announced that he won't seek reelection to a third term representing the people of Nebraska in the United States Senate. The former two-term governor had won reelection to the Senate in 2006 with a whopping 64% of the vote and has been in elected office since 1991.

So, why is Ben Nelson opting to retire rather than campaign to stay in Washington's most exclusive club?

One word: ObamaCare.

After Democrat Sen. Mary Landieu of Louisiana was bought-off to vote for ObamaCare with the "Louisiana Purchase," Harry Reid and the Senate Democrats were still one vote short of the threshold necessary to end a Republican filibuster and pass ObamaCare. The last holdout was Ben Nelson.

Then came the Cornhusker Kickback.

In exchange for adding a provision to the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act granting the state of Nebraska 100% federal funding of ObamaCare's Medicaid expansion indefinitely, the Democrats purchased Ben Nelson's vote. They had the 60 votes needed to end the GOP filibuster and move ObamaCare along for final passage and to be signed into law by President Obama.

The quid pro quo outraged Nebraska voters. The once-popular Nelson saw his approval numbers crater.Nelson couldn't even get a slice of pizza in Omaha without getting a slice of what was on voters' minds after he paved the way for ObamaCare's passage.

Make no mistake: Ben Nelson isn't running for reelection because of ObamaCare. The Cornhusker Kickback has kicked him right out of the Senate.

Today, approval of ObamaCare is as low as ever. The latest AP/GfK poll shows only 29% supporting the law. And, with the 2012 elections just around the corner, we can set the stage for full and complete repeal of ObamaCare.

With The Repeal Pledge, we can hold politicians accountable for doing what the American people want and repealing this government take-over of private health care decisions. Politicians have given us plenty of reasons not to trust what they say. We need them to show that they're committed to repeal by putting pen to paper.

Will you forward this email to 5 of your friends right now and ask them to sign The People's Promise? Every new signature on The People Promise puts more pressure on candidates and incumbents to do the right thing.

In 2012, we have the opportunity to elect a Congress and a President who will pass and sign repeal of ObamaCare. Help us make that opportunity a reality.

Sincerely,
